Restoran Uli is one of those restaurants that is close to my heart and it's solely because of the chef. As a little boy, I was introduced to Chinese food through this guy's cooking when he was based in Sin Hoong Hin Restaurant which used to be the Chinese restaurant in Tanjung Malim. Sadly, that restaurant is history today after the premature death of the owner due to kidney failure. With that, this chef had gone to the UK and worked there for almost two decades and had come back to Malaysia and opened this restaurant about a year ago.
The Restaurant In Taman Intan Setia, Tanjung Malim |
A Quiet Evening |
This restaurant is located right at the end of Jalan Intan Setia 1, Taman Intan Setia which is along the old trunk road heading up north. Since there are many new Chinese restaurants now, business can be seasonal, some days very good and some days quiet and today was one such evening where there were just a handful of customers. Another reason why I like coming here is because we get to meet many old timers, people that used to frequent the old Sin Hoong Hin then.
The menu is simple and rather limited. Don't look for exotic seafood here, you would not get them. In fact, even items like squid and large shrimps are not available here. I did ask him once and his reply was there aren't many who ask for those and it's just not practical for him to stock on them as it's expensive and tends to spoil rather quickly. That surely makes sense. Nevertheless, he does have some good dishes that we all enjoy.
Claypot Bean Curd @ RM 12.00 |
The Claypot Bean Curd came with slices of Japanese Tofu (Egg Bean Curd), some pork, shrimps and vegetables in dark, starchy broth. This dish somehow fell short of my expectations this evening. I felt that it was quite bland and a little more salt was needed. In fact, everyone was of the same opinion. Otherwise, it was decent for the price. I would rate this one at 6/10.
Steamed Fish with Chili Paste @ RM 23.00 |
This Steamed Fish with Chili Paste was pretty good. In fact, it was the very same recipe that he used to prepare then which is one that we all enjoy. The paste was generous, thick, mildly spicy and mildly sweet. Basically, a good dish that we enjoyed and I would rate this at 8/10.
Pork Spring Rolls @ RM 12.00 |
Pork Spring Rolls are another one of my favourites since childhood days and it's solely because of his preparation at Restaurant Sin Hoong Hin. And now, after so many years, I am tasting the same flavours and it was just heavenly. I've never tasted one that's close to this in terms of taste. This is just setting a new standard for this dish and as such, it would just be unfair if I rated this anything less than a perfect 10/10. Highly recommended!
Petai Sambal @ RM 12.00 |
This Sambal Petai with shrimps was awesome too. He had used larger Petai's for the dish and was generous with the amount of Belacan used. The only setback would be the overuse of oil. Otherwise, it tasted great and I would rate this at 9/10.
Our Bill For The Day |
Except for the Claypot Bean Curd, the rest of the dishes were good as usual and a special mention goes to the Spring Rolls which was heavenly. If you're one that fancies that dish, I would suggest that you give it a try here. You would be hooked to it and return for sure. Another good one to have at this restaurant would be their Petai Mee Hoon. That is another dish that is exceptionally good. Prices are reasonable too.
