Nasi Ayam Periuk Besar @ Kulim, Kedah

Located on Jalan Raya KM 16 Kulim - Mahang, right beside the banks of Sungai Kob is this little restaurant called Nasi Ayam Periuk Besar. Having started their business about 20 years ago as a peddler, this shop serves great Malay Style Chicken Rice and has gained popularity since then. This is their first physical outlet and today they have around 10 shops scattered around Penang, Kedah and Northern Perak. I have heard much about this restaurant and since I am in Kulim today, decided to pop by for lunch. I was told that their Chicken Rice sells like hot cakes and we have to be there by 12 noon to ensure that we get to taste this.

Interior of the restaurant
The layout is quite simple but I was told that their later outlets have a modern touch to it. It is so busy that you would have to wait in line just to get a table. And then again, only drink orders are taken at the table. For the Chicken Rice, you would need to walk over to the counter, wait in line again, and grab your orders.

Birds of chicken sold like hot cakes
Even that little time that I was here, there were easily 30 birds of chicken were sold just like that. Besides those that dine in, their major business is take aways. During peak times, the queue of take aways can go as far as 20 or 25 people ahead of you. I was told that they sell around 120 birds in a single day and that's a lot.

Finally Got Our Orders

The Chicken Rice @ RM 5.50
The Chicken Rice set comes with a bowl of pepper soup. The Yellow Rice and Sweet Roasted Chicken was definitely heavenly. At a humble price of RM 5.50, this was definitely the best Malay style Chicken Rice that I have ever tried. Even the Executive Chefs at Hilton are not able to cook up to this taste for this dish. I can say that with conviction as I have tried a similar dish at Hilton recently. This dish scores a rating of 9.8/10   on my scale. The chicken itself was naturally sweetened and it was so tender and juicy. Even a simple soup like this was literally heavenly. I now realise how they are so popular and achieved great success with the business. And it is also great to know that the taste over the years is intact, despite the massive growth they have seen. The total bill for my dad and I today came to just RM 14.00 including the drinks. A highly recommended place. By the way, Garmis GPS does have this place noted in its maps for ease of find and that is how I located this restaurant in the first place.

    1. I hope so too and it seems like they will. Based on the popularity of this place which has been in existence for so long. Glad that I had used Foursquare to find this place. :)
