Kim Kee Bak Kut Teh @ Tanjung Malim, Perak

Located in Kg. Berop along Jalan Slim Baru in Tanjung Malim is this very old restaurant called Kim Kee Bak Kut Teh. This restaurant has been at this very same spot for more than 30 years now and I have been frequenting here since my childhood days. This is one of the famous BKT restaurants in Tanjung Malim where locals go for their BKT fix.

Kim Kee Bak Kut Teh in Tanjung Malim

Very Simple Set Up
This restaurant has a very simple set up. It is typically an extension to the house which is at the rear of this structure. All these years, it is still being run by the same family and I know them well as the main person running this restaurant now was my classmate in school. In the years before 1995, this used to be a popular stop over among the truck drivers who used to use the state roads and this was before the opening of the North South Highway. Today, there aren't that many truck drivers who stop by but instead they still get good support from the locals as there are only two remaining Bak Kut Teh restaurants in Tanjung Malim that have been operating since the 1980's.

Herbal Tea @ RM 0.80
At least in Tanjung Malim, you can still get a good glass of Herbal Tea for RM 0.80 . The quality of the tea is also still very good and isn't diluted as the ones that you commonly find in Kuala Lumpur. I would rate the above Herbal Tea at 9.5/10 .

White Rice @ RM 0.80
Here they do not have any of the oil rice that you would possibly find the in those BKT shops around Sungai Buloh or even Klang. It is simply the standard white rice. A large bowl comes at a price of RM 0.80 and a small bowl at the price of RM 0.60 . One of the main reasons for this is simply the Bak Kut Teh broth. Here the broth served is not the light coloured one but it is the dark and almost blackish soup which goes very well with the white rice. Also items like Yau Mak Choy and Yau Char Kui which is a standard dish around the Klang Valley is not available here.

Bak Kut Teh @ RM 7.00
Here you get to choose you preferred meat cuts. They have a variety of options to choose from lean meat right up to big bone. I was not in the mood for a big bone today as this was supposed to be a very brief stop for me and hence went for the lean cuts with a little fat attached to it and you get exactly what you ordered. As mentioned before, you could see that the broth here is of the very dark version and it is quite strong in flavour. For those who prefer the lighter version might find this a little too strong but I just like it this way. I would rate this Bak Kut Teh at 9.7/10 .

Lor Tan @ RM 0.80 each
As they use the darker broth here, the eggs also comes with a better flavour and tend to be slightly harder. It is also priced at only RM 0.80 each which is fairly cheap. I would rate their eggs at 9/10 .

Tofu @ RM 1.20
The Bean Curd here comes in two portion sizes. The above is the smaller one and is priced at RM 1.20 and the larger one at RM 2.40 . Here they use the long Bean Curd which is cut into smaller cubes. This may seem odd to those that are used to the small Tofu that is served in BKT restaurants around the Klang Valley. Yet to me, this seems like a more delicious preparation. I would rate their Tofu at 8.8/10 .

A Bowl of Herbal Soup
Besides the broth being served with the meat, it is also common here to find them serving a separate bowl of the same broth and you can request for top ups which are free of charge.

For those who are bored with the common preparation found in Kuala Lumpur, this is definitely a good alternative. I do remember many of my Singaporean friends always asking me where to get the Bak Kut Teh that comes in the dark broth and this is one of such places. Tanjung Malim is also located not very far from Kuala Lumpur and today with the North South Highway, it is just a 40 minutes drive.

Address: Kampung Berop, Jalan Slim Baru, 35900 Tanjung Malim, Perak.
