Kumar's @ Oasis Ara Damansara, Petaling Jaya

Located in Oasis Ara Damansara, Kumar's is one of the few Tamil fine dining restaurants in the Klang Valley. Having started their business sometime in March this year, they have become very famous with their consistently great food and excellent ambiance. The credit for this also goes to their General Manager Vincent who manages this place in accordance to high standards. I had visited this place for the first time in April this year and it was for a buffet line and during that visit, I was completely amazed at how good this place was both in terms of food as well as their service levels. I had also blogged about it and that entry is one of my top ten entries in terms of number of hits daily. If you would be keen to read that entry, please click on this link: http://venoth.blogspot.com/2013/04/kumars-restaurant-oasis-ara-damansara.html . I had recommended this restaurant to a few friends at work and we decided to visit this place for dinner today.

Kumar's Restaurant in Oasis Ara Damansara

Interior of the Restaurant
This restaurant has a splendid view of the man made oasis like water feature. The restaurant is a three story building. The ground floor is meant for the common dining area, the first floor has a common dining area as well as a private dining area that can hold up to 30 pax. They also have the roof top area which is ideal for larger private parties. Please do note that this is a Halal restaurant but they do serve alcohol on their menu. They have a good variety of both draft and bottled beer, a long list of wines and some liqueur. The bar is located on the first floor. They have recently changed their opening hours from their previous hours of 10 am - 10.30 pm to the new opening hours of 10.30 am - 3 pm and they open again from 6.30 pm - 11 pm .

Combo Sets
The above are just some of the pages from their menu. They have also added the Combo sets which were not available previously. For lunch, they also have some Thali Sets and I was told that from next month onwards, they would be serving Banana Leaf meals on Sunday afternoons. I have tried most of their dishes from the last visit and hence, I played more of an advisory role and let the rest of my work mates to decide on the dishes for tonight.

Papadam
Once the orders were taken, we were served the above Papadams and they were on the house.

Fresh Watermelon Juice @ RM 11.90
One of my work mates ordered the above Fresh Watermelon Juice. They were really fresh, concentrated and without too much ice. I would rate this drink at 10/10 .

Mango Lassi @ RM 7.90
According to another friend of mine, their Mango Lassi was also very well prepared and he found it to be one of the best that he had ever tried. In his opinion, this drink deserves a perfect 10/10 .

Masala Tea @ RM 3.50
Their Masala Tea is also very good. On both visits here, I had ordered the same drink as I really like their Masala Tea. It comes well infused with spices but unsweetened. Sugar is provided and you have the liberty to sweeten it to your preference. Once again, this would score 10/10 on my radar.

Chapati Set @ RM 6.00
The Chapati comes in a set of two. The Chapati's were of a decent size, they were soft and fluffy and tasted quite nice. I would say that this was well prepared. It may have not been as perfect as the ones that you get in those Punjabi shops but for a Tamil restaurant, it was very good. I would rate them at 9/10 .

Plain Thosai Set @ RM 6.00
Their Thosai Set had three Thosai's. They were really thick, very nicely made and were absolutely delicious. They were even good to be eaten on their own and I  would rate them at 10/10 . Perfectly done. Besides the above Thosai and Chapati, we also ordered some rice and they came at RM 2.90 . It is worth mentioning that they only use AAA Grade rice grains here.

Potato Cutlets @ RM 3.90
Their Potato Cutlets were very good. The potato's were infused with the right spices and they were fried to perfection. I would rate these at 10/10 .  For the price of RM 3.90, they provided three decent sized cutlets which is very much worth it.

Stewed Spinach With Dhall @ RM 8.90
This is one of the top selling vegetable dishes.  The Spinach is cooked along with Dhall, Ghee, some spices and dried chili giving it a slightly sweet yet authentic taste. All of us loved this dish as it was very good. Reminded me of the good old days when my grandmother used to prepare this dish. Absolutely good. I would rate this a perfect 10/10 .

Sura (Shark) Puttu @ RM 15.90
Well, this dish was a slight let down. For me, if it is Sura Puttu it has to have a lot of Shark meat instead of more potato's and vegetables where eventually you are unable to taste any Shark meat at all. Here the latter was the case and I was a little disappointed with this dish although the rest of my friends liked it. I would only rate this dish at 6.5/10 .

Chicken Sambal @ RM 9.90
This was a fantastic dish. Please do note that it can be quite spicy and if you can't take too much of it, do let them know. Everyone of us thoroughly enjoyed this dish as it was really perfect. The Chicken was cooked so well and the gravy was really delicious. We literally cleared this dish clean. I would rate this at 10/10 .

Mutton Perattal @ RM 12.90
This dish was also well prepared but it did not stand out as good as the earlier Chicken dish. I am not saying that this was not good but what I am saying is that it could have been better. The gravy was nice but the mutton chunks were too big and could have been cut into a further two halves and that would have made this dish much better. It felt as if we had to chew large chunks of meat which ran out of taste when the gravy was gone. I would only rate this dish at 8.5/10 .

Fish Cutlet @ RM 5.90
Their Fish Cutlet was again a slight disappointment. The reason for that is simply because it lacked fish meat. To me, fish cutlets must be purely fish meat and not mixed with Potato. By doing that, you would be able to get the full taste out of that fish. Adding potato to this has only subdued the taste of the fish altogether. I would only rate this at 6/10 .

On the whole, the dishes here were simply great and almost every dish was close to perfection, except for a few that I have mentioned. I have no regrets coming here today and so was the case with the rest of my friends and all of us felt that it was absolutely worth it. Definitely this would be a place that they would return soon and most likely with more of their friends. Loved everything about this place.

  2. Really like your descriptive blogging and the menu and prices , unlike most of the bloggers never really show the menu and dishes as how you display it in your blogs .Obviously a better blogging than the rest ....Anjali.

    1. I would wholeheartedly agree with you. It's the same with most hotels too where their food is prepared the Halal way but since they serve alcohol on their menu, the premise does not get any certification. Best to always be cautious though :)

    1. Hi Thiaga, apologies for the delay in responding. Yes, I did on a separate occasion where by we hired the entire top floor for a private function. Not cheap, limited variety as they seemed to have run out that evening despite having repeatedly informed them that we would be needing more of those.
