Oyster King @ Mont Kiara, Kuala Lumpur

We were working late at the office today and one of my friends suggested for us to have dinner together before we head back. A couple of them suggested for us to try the Oyster King outlet that is located on the Lower Ground Floor of 1 Mont Kiara Mall in Mont Kiara. I know this place well as my office is attached to this mall. However, I have never tried the food before as I am not much of an oyster fan. Today, as the majority are in agreement, I decided to give it a try.

Oyster King Outlet

Manned by Two Burmese Guys

List of other outlets

This is not much of a restaurant. It is a small kiosk like stall with a common seating area. However, the tables are designated and hence spillover into the other kiosks tables is not allowed. It is a 100% self service stall. As it was dinner time, it was pretty vacant. I know that during lunch, it is difficult to find a seat here.

The Menu
These are all the items that are offered at this kiosk. I did see from other food blogs from outlets in Mid Valley and other places that the menu and offerings varies. Here it seems to be minimal but sufficient I guess. I did also observe that these two Burmese guys took turns cooking the dishes. The feeling that I got was that each specializes in a number of dishes and when that dish is ordered, the relevant specialist cooks the dish. They also take turns in washing the cutlery and all other chores. As mentioned above, it is a 100% self service restaurant and we would have to walk up to the counter, place our orders and make the payments. The dish, once ready would be called out and we would need to collect them from the counter.

O-Chien (Fried Oyster) @ RM 9.00

O-Chien (Fried Oyster) @ RM 9.00
The first dish to arrive was the above called O-Chien which is Fried Oysters with Carrot Cakes and starch. I find this dish to be good. There was a decent amount of oysters and most importantly, they were clean. In some places, when the Oysters are not washed well, you may get traces of sand. Here that was not an issue. Taste was pretty good and was lovely being eaten hot. The setback may just be that it does take a while before the dishes are ready, service is a little slow though. As for the food, I would rate this 8.5/10 . Price may seem a little expensive but hey, this is Mont Kiara and I am sure the rental here is very expensive too.

Lala Fried Rice @ RM 7.50
This was the next dish to arrive. This dish was good too and it was as good as any Chinese Style Fried Rice. There were two huge prawns besides the decent amount of oysters in the dish. Taste was also good and the portion size was huge. Definitely worth trying this dish. Rating, 8.8/10 .

Cute little take away boxes
Some of them did a take away and I liked these cute little boxes which they use. Reminds me of the Chinese Take Aways in America and Australia.

Lala Fried Mee Hoon @ RM 7.50
Well, this was one of the take away items and this photograph was taken by opening the lid of the take away box and shooting directly. I did get a taste of this too. It was good. More like the Hokkien Style of cooking. I would rate this 8/ 10 . Definitely good to try this here.

Deep Fried Oysters @ RM 7.80
This again was a photograph taken by opening the lid of the take away box and shooting directly inside. Now, for the price, I feel the volume was a tad too little. I know oysters are expensive but this surely is not up to the mark. The taste was just average. I believe they have coated the oysters with the Kentucky Flour and it was a little salty and too oily. I would only rate this 5/10 .

On the whole, this place was not too bad and did have a few good dishes to offer. Their locations are all conveniently located within strategic malls in the city and parking is not a problem. One of the setbacks that should be addressed is their slow service. I think they should have at least one more person at this outlet to increase the speed of service. I was told by my friends that during lunch, sometimes the waiting time can get up to 45 minutes. That is simply not acceptable as most people that come here are office workers and their time available for lunch in total is only an hour. Should they improve on this, then the rest should be fine.

我是甲洞三宝寺 (暹廟) SAMNAK SAMBODHI BUDDHIST ASSOCIATION NO: 19-21 JALAN 38 TAMAN DESA JAYA KEPONG 52100 KUALA LUMPUR, MALAYSIA.
