Tasty Chapathi @ Ipoh Road, Kuala Lumpur

This place is not alien to me and this is not the first time I am coming here. Over the past two years, I have been here numerous times but unfortunately I was not in the habit of Food Blogging until recently someone suggested to me that I should as I am a true food lover. All these years I was strictly into the habit of Travel Blogging. Thus said, I had never recorded all the previous times I visited this place and this would be the first time at this particular restaurant. The place, Restoran Tasty Chapathi, is an authentic Punjabi restaurant located in Viva Mall, Ipoh Road. Though the word authentic is abused many a times nowadays, here it refers to what it actually should mean.

Restoran Tasty Chapathi @ Viva Mall

Their Logo
This restaurant is tucked hidden from common eyes that pass Jalan Ipoh. It is on Jalan Suppiah Pillai off Jalan Ipoh. Attached to a condominium, the location may not be ideal yet it is always full. The quality of food is perfect and the best part, parking is never a problem as you can park freely at the visitors parking within the condominium.

Us at the restaurant

Lovely Decor
The restaurant is owned and run by Punjabis from Punjab, India. All the cooks, waiters and waitresses are from Punjab, India. That shows the authenticity of this place. It is always buzzing with crowd during peak hours of lunch and dinner. Private function rooms are also available but have got to be booked a few weeks before hand. The thing that I love most about this restaurant besides their food is the speed of service and their level of commitment towards customer satisfaction. No wonder they are listed as must visit restaurant in Malaysia by Tripadvisor and truly, they are. I think they do not need the support of local non Punjabis as they are always patronised by expatriates and local Punjabis. The restaurant serves both Vegetarian and Non Vegetarian dishes. As we were Vegetarians today, we specifically ordered the Vegetarian dishes and that is what I would like to showcase from this visit and that is also the reason that I have included this entry under the Vegetarian category. Please do note that they use different woks for both Vegetarian and Non Vegetarian dishes. During lunch hours, they do serve Punjabi Thali sets too. However, these are not available for dinner. Besides the Ala Carte dishes that I have ordered today, their Briyanis are also a favourite. Do not come to this restaurant expecting the usual South Indian Cuisine as they specialise in Punjabi Cuisine and the taste may differ to that of their South Indian neighbours. Yet, it is perfect Punjabi cuisine. By the way, they occupy two shop lots in the Viva Mall.

Masala Tea @ RM 2.50
The first drink to arrive was my Punjabi Masala Tea. This is slightly different to the Chennai Style Masala Tea which we find in the Indian Restaurants. As you can see, it is clean and perfect. I loved this drink. For your information, the best tea makers in India are the Malayalis (in South India) and Punjabis (in North India).  I would rate this tea 9/10 for a Punjabi Style Tea and it sells for a mere RM 2.50 for a classy restaurant like this.

All Cutleries Are Disinfected

After the drinks were served, they then served the cutleries. Guess what, they were boiling hot. I managed to track the cause of this when I passed their kitchen on the way to the toilets. They disinfect all their cutleries.

Chapatis @ RM 1.20 Each
As there were two of us, we ordered five Chapatis. I have never tried anything else besides Chapatis at this restaurant. The Chapatis are delicious but they are small. They would be just slightly bigger than an average adult male's palm. The Chapatis, though small, are delicious and they do not add Marjerin to add taste to it. It is definitely friendly to our Cholesterol cautious friends. I would rate their Chapatis at 9/10 .

Dhal Tadka @ RM 6.00
Unfortunately, all their dishes come in standard portions. This applies to this dish too. If you were alone, I would never recommend this dish as this is too much. However for two or three people, this is ideal. The taste, was 8.5/10 . I wonder why they use weird shaped plates. The culprit must be IKEA. However this is another recommended dish here.

Vegetarian Chicken Masala @ RM 9.00
This dish was good, no doubt but not the best. It is made of mock chicken which has blended well with the gravy however, it is not the best that I have tried. I would limit my rating for this to 8/10 . For RM 9.00, it was surely worth it. Good for two to three.

Vegetarian Mutton Varuval @ RM 9.00
This is an excellent dish. Both my brother and dad on another occasion found this to be their best ever Vegetarian Mutton Varuval ever tried and I would agree with them. The last time I was here was with my immediate family, we ordered three of this dishes in succession one after another. It was perfected and this comes from the mouth of a very fussy diner. Between the last trip and now it has been nine months and the quality has not dwindled. I would rate this 10/10 . Remember that this entry is strictly on their vegetarian dishes and their non Vegetarian dishes i.e. actual Mutton is heavenly too.

Gulab Jamun @ RM 1.90
That was pretty much what we had for the day for the main meals. The rest of the sweets was consumed by me alone. I ordered this Gulab Jamun first. Once upon a time, this used to be my favourite and it still is today. Then Restaurant Jai Hind used to be my favourite for this sweet but today, this place has become my favourite. It was made to perfection. Soft, sweet and heavenly would be the ideal tag line. I would rate this 9.8/10 .  A MUST Try!!!!!

50 Gram's of Barfi @ RM 2.50
This was slightly above average. Per serving measured to 50 gram's which was decent. It would not be the best but surely recommended. I would rate this sweet at 8/10 .

Brief Map
The above two photographs shows the exact location and brief map to the restaurant. In a nutshell, this place is definitely a strongly recommended place for authentic Punjabi cum Haryana cuisine. Another plus point at this place is that they do not charge service tax. The bill for today was limited to RM 36.90 . A low price to pay for for good vegetarian dinner If you love North Indian Food, this place is a must try be it Vegetarian or Non Vegetarian.

    1. Hi there, just like any other Indian restaurants, they have the certification that shows that their meat and poultry suppliers are Halal certified but I doubt if this premise itself is Halal certified.

我是甲洞三宝寺 (暹廟) SAMNAK SAMBODHI BUDDHIST ASSOCIATION NO: 19-21 JALAN 38 TAMAN DESA JAYA KEPONG 52100 KUALA LUMPUR, MALAYSIA.

    Mr Lim Sok Chia
