Restoran Shing Kee is not a new restaurant in Tanjung Malim. They have been around for a number of years now mainly catering for lunch, generally the Chap Fun (Chinese Mixed Rice) stuffs. About two weeks back, they had extended their business hours to cater for dinner too and they have some special items on their menu to offer. They are Kampung Steamed Chicken Rice, homemade Tauchu Yong Tau Fu and White Pepper Soup with cabbage and pork. These are the only items that they sell at nights and they seem to be selling like hot cakes. Their evening session commences at 4 pm and goes on till 10 pm. The restaurant is located along Jalan Intan Setia 1 which is along the road fronting row of shops. Parking is easy here, day or night.

A Simple No Frills Restaurant |

Sometimes It Tends To Be Quite Warm |
The place is a standard Chinese coffee shop style set up. Run by a couple, the restaurant has it's own set of fans. I came starving because I was determined to try all three offerings tonight. The couple were very friendly and they took the time to explain to me what the dishes were all about. Having understood, I then ordered all three of them. They were initially taken by shock as I was alone and had ended up ordering quite a bit. I told them, don't worry. If it's insufficient, I'd order more later. With a friendly chuckle, they then got on with their work.

Chinese Tea @ RM 0.50 |
They prepare Barley, Cincau, Herbal Tea and Chrysanthemum Tea on daily rotations and today, it was Barley. Being not a great fan of Barley, I decided to stick with the standard Chinese Tea and this was priced at RM 0.50 per glass. Good preparation and I would rate this at 9/10 .

Very Fresh Cucumber Slices |
The set came with some Rice, Steamed Kampung Chicken, slices of Cucumber and some dip sauce and this was priced at RM 5.00 . Portions were good and this alone is sufficient for an average eater. Firstly, I loved the presentation. Even being such a simple dish, they had presented it very well and I am one who always stresses on good presentation when it comes to food. The rice was very tasty. It was not the variety that was cooked with ginger and butter but the common rice with some sauce on it and it was delicious. The sauce had done all the magic that it had to. The Steamed Chicken was again tender, juicy and so delicious. Generally, Kampung Chicken tends to be slightly stiff but this was so good. The cucumber slices, just look at them. They were lavish with the portion and it was such a delight. So fresh and juicy. Not the stale type that some restaurants serve. Amazing is what this dish was and I would rate this at 9.8/10 . Very good!

An Amazing Sauce |
|
So Good To Be Eaten Just Like That |
All Chicken Rice places would commonly serve the usual Chili Paste with vinegar on the sides but these people had served this very unique sauce. It was made using Soy Sauce, Vinegar, lots of Garlic, Ginger and Bird Eye Chili. This was a winner! It was so good that I had asked for three top ups. I would rate this at nothing less than 10/10 .

White Pepper Soup |

White Pepper Soup |
Together with the Chicken Rice set, they also served a small portion of the above White Pepper Soup. This is their standard version that's provided complimentary and not their specialty one which I would be talking about shortly. Taste wise, this too was tasty and I would rate this at 8.5/10 .

Loved The Texture |
The next specialty variety here is their stuffed Yong Tau Fu served with Tauchu. Do note that they only make the above and not a wide variety. Quantity is limited too. The variety that they have is Stuffed Fried Tofu, Stuffed Bitter Gourd and Stuffed Chili and these sell like hot cakes. Best to come before 8.30 pm if you are coming for these. You could also have these with their White Pepper Soup but I would recommend to try this Tauchu version. Their fillings are Pork only and not fish. What I loved most about these is the pork fillings. Though priced at RM 1.20 each, I feel that they were truly worth it. They were huge and delicious. The unique combination of having them prepared with Tauchu was another delight. One that I would surely recommend! I would rate these at 9/10 .

Streaky Pork Belly |
The final item here is the above White Pepper Soup with Cabbage and streaky Pork Belly. This is priced at RM 6.00 per large bowl and is good for one. Some may opt to have this with a plate of White Rice and that's an additional RM 1.50 . It came with loads of cabbage and Pork Belly slices and indeed quite tasty. This wasn't the best that I had tried but apparently this is the number one seller here. Almost everyone that came in tonight had ordered a bowl of this. One of the reasons may simply be because no other place in town sells this.Though not great, it was still good and one that I would recommend too. I would rate this at 8/10 .
On the whole, I was very happy with the food here. The Steamed Kampung Chicken Rice was very good, their Yong Tau Fu was very good and the White Pepper Soup was good. Above that, I simply loved the hospitality. Nice friendly couple who would make you feel very much welcomed. Do play them a visit if you happen to be in Tanjung Malim or a fan of any one of those items.
