Purple Cane Tea Restaurant @ The Gardens, Kuala Lumpur

Purple Cane Tea Restaurant is a unique restaurant that serves healthy dishes, all of which have tea or a combination of tea's added to them. I believe that they are the first to start such a concept in Malaysia. Though this restaurant serves authentic Chinese dishes, this is a Pork Free restaurant. They do not have the Halal status as alcohol is served on premise and some of their dishes have alcohol added to them. Therefore, it is best to read through their menu items carefully before placing the orders. This restaurant has a number of branches across the Klang Valley and one in Ipoh, Perak. This is the first time that I am visiting this restaurant which is located on the Lower Ground Floor of The Gardens Mall.

The Restaurant
This restaurant occupies two units on the Lower Ground Floor. We arrived here at just about 1 pm and the place was packed with customers with many of the customers having made prior reservations. Since we did not make a reservation, we had to wait almost 20 minutes for a table. The key staffs including the kitchen staffs were all local Chinese and they also used some foreign help with the table waiting.

Cutlery
Their menu was very impressive and all their dishes were unique as they were tea infused dishes. They also had some dishes for vegetarians. It took us a while to go through their menu and once we had decided, the orders were placed. Although they were running on full capacity, it seems that the staffs are well capable of handling such a crowd and it seemed like a day to day routine to me.

Waiter Filling Up The Tea Pot

Long Jing Green Tea @ RM 13.00 per pax
They had a good selection of Chinese Tea and since I am not too familiar, I left the ordering to a Chinese friend of mine. She recommended the Long Jing Green Tea which was priced at RM 13.00 per pax. The tea was fine and light and had a nice aroma without the bitterness. For me, I would rate this at 9.5/10 .Regardless of the amount that the 'table' consumes, the tea prices are fixed by the number of people. Since there were the three of us, this was priced at RM 36.00 .

Pot Of Soup

Lotus Root Chicken Tea Soup @ RM 6.90

Lotus Root Chicken Tea Soup @ RM 6.90
Tea Soup's are another famous delicacy here and it came highly recommended by my friend. I have tried these before at another place in Publika and I liked it. Since she was strongly recommending it, I decided to give this a try too. I went for the Lotus Root Chicken Tea Soup which was priced at RM 6.90 per pot. It was a moderate sized pot and the tea soup was served piping hot. The soup itself was very good, felt more like a medicinal drink but it was delicious. I would rate this at 9.3/10 .

Sweet Corn Chicken Tea Soup @ RM 6.90
My friend went for the above Sweet Corn Chicken Tea Soup which was also priced at RM 6.90 per pot. This was slightly sweeter, definitely contributed by the sweet corn and a little milder than mine. Good stuff, but my preference is clearly for the previous. I would rate this at 9/10 .

Burdock Chicken Tea Soup @ RM 7.90
My other friend decided to go for the Burdock Chicken Tea Soup which was priced at RM 7.90 per pot, a Ringgit more than the two previous ones. This one, was a little bolder than the sweet corn variety, but still milder than mine. Taste wise, another good one and I would rate this at 9.2/10 .

Long Jiang Green Tea Rice @ RM 1.80 per bowl
This was interesting as even their rice is steamed with tea leaves. This one is White Rice which is steamed along with some Long Jiang Green Tea. Being a mild tea, it did not have an assertive flavour on the rice but a mild hint of aftertaste. Not bad actually. I would rate this at 8.9/10 .

Puer Tea Brown Rice @ RM 2.50
Slightly more price wise, this was better but one has to be used to Brown Rice in order to like this. This had a bolder aftertaste but went well with the dishes. I would rate this at 9/10 .

Blanched Asparagus With Chrysanthemums and Green Tea Sauce @ RM 18.00

Blanched Asparagus With Chrysanthemums and Green Tea Sauce @ RM 18.00
A very unique way of preparing an Asparagus dish! This was quite good and all the flavours stood out and blended well with one another. Loved this preparation and would rate it at 9.3/10 .

Fried Cuttlefish with Oat and Tea @ RM 23.00

Fried Cuttlefish with Oat and Tea @ RM 23.00
Another dish that I was impressed with. The cuttlefish were flour coated and deep fried and this was served with some dried oats. Despite being deep fried, the cuttlefish were crispy and had no traces of oil in them. The blend of cuttlefish and oats were another treat. A good preparation and I would rate this at 9.4/10 .

Stir Fried Prawns with Mashed Salted Egg Yolk and Tea @ RM 33.00

Stir Fried Prawns with Mashed Salted Egg Yolk and Tea @ RM 33.00
This dish was really good! I have tried this in a number of places but the preparation here was outstanding. Slightly on the pricey side, nevertheless a satisfying dish! I would rate this at 9.6/10 .

Iced Melon Slices with Lemon and Tea Sauce @ RM 6.90

Iced Melon Slices with Lemon and Tea Sauce @ RM 6.90
An extremely simple dish that does not take any culinary skills to prepare. Nevertheless, it was fantastic. Being served cold, it was refreshing and surprisingly went well with the rice. A must try! I would rate this at 9.4/10 .

Out Lunch
We definitely enjoyed our lunch here. All the dishes tried were good and were a class of it's own. I have never imagined that tea infused dishes could taste this good. Now, having done our lunch, time to try some of their deserts here.

Yam Sago Desert with Jasmine Tea and Coconut Milk @ RM 5.90
My friend ordered this desert and this was a hot desert. Slightly on the sweet side, it was creamy, thick and delicious! The coconut milk definitely played a critical part in making this great. I would rate this at 9.2/10 .

Soya with Pumpkin Caramel and Jasmine Tea @ RM 5.90

Soya with Pumpkin Caramel and Jasmine Tea @ RM 5.90
This desert was heavenly! The Soya with pumpkin caramel went extremely well with the Jasmine Tea and it had such wonderful flavours that would make one addicted to it. A perfect desert and I would rate this at 9.6/10 .

Chrysanthemums, Lotus Seed and Sea Coconut Desert @ RM 4.90

Chrysanthemums, Lotus Seed and Sea Coconut Desert @ RM 4.90
A cold desert that was very refreshing. One that is very suitable to the current hot weather. Loved it! I would rate this at 9.3/10 .

Branches
Just like the main dishes and soups, the deserts too were absolutely good. Now I understand why this place is so crowded. If you love Chinese Food and are in the mood to try something new, then this is definitely the place. The food was good and the service was very efficient. The prices may seem to be on the high side but they were worth the price. Definitely a recommended place.
