Restaurant Ban Heong is the most recently opened Chinese Restaurant in Tanjung Malim, Perak. Previously, this place was occupied by Restaurant Wun Nam which has been operating in Tanjung Malim since 1975 and that restaurant had been taken over by the son and he has moved that restaurant to Damansara Perdana, Petaling Jaya. This restaurant belongs to the brother in law of the previous owner who had just moved here from Kuala Lumpur. Though the change in name, it is still very much patronised by the same locals who used to frequent the previous restaurant.

Generally, there are three separate seating areas in this restaurant. There is an outdoor seating area, a common indoor seating area and a private dining hall which is curtained all around thus cutting visibility from the outside. With the new management and branding, all their cooks have changed and this is the first time we are dining in this restaurant.

The Menu |
They do have an extensive menu covering a number of seafood and meat stuffs. The only setback with the menu is that the price of the dishes are not printed. It would have been great if that piece of information was included. Otherwise, the available selection is huge. As it was just the three of us here tonight with the exception of my brother, we ordered sparingly not wanting to leave food behind and wasted. The ordering process was rather simple. The lady boss appears with a note pad and pen and you just mention the items to her and off she goes.

Chinese Tea @ RM 1.00 |
|
White Rice @ RM 1.30 |
The drinks was fairly simple for us and we all went for the Chinese Tea which came at RM 1.00 each glass and the white rice was priced at RM 1.30 per plate.

Chinese Broccoli Sauteed with Garlic @ RM 7.00 |
The first dish to arrive was the above Chinese Broccoli Sauteed with Garlic. The dish was rather good and they had used loads of garlic which gave it a very solid taste. The vegetables were also very fresh and not overcooked and that gave it a crisp, juicy taste which went well with the base sauce. For RM 7.00, the portion size was also rather decent and was sufficient for the three of us. I would rate this dish at 7.5/10 .

Mapo Beancurd @ RM 12.00 |
The next dish to arrive was the Mapo Beancurd which is a Sichuan dish. Here it was prepared less spicy and that's somewhat contrary to how it should be. There were loads of vegetables and pork in the dish which was all good. Otherwise, this dish was nice but definitely not the best that I had tried. I would rate this dish at 5.5/10 .

Steamed Fish with Chili Paste @ RM 26.30 |
This was the last dish that we had for the night. We asked for a small fish but this must have been the smallest one they had and it weighted around 750 gm. For the size, I think that the price is very reasonable. The taste was fairly good but again I would say that this was not one of the best that I had tried or even one of those that you would remember at the back of your mind. To me, this deserves a rating of 5/10 . It just lacked some ingredients that you would usually find in the chili paste and my guess here is that they must have skipped adding some pork lard which would definitely boost the taste.
On the whole from the dishes that we had tonight, this place definitely has some good items to offer though some of their dishes were rather average. Would I return here, surely I would and probably with a larger group so that I am able to try an array of dishes to gauge the other dishes as well.
