Thai Base @ Bandar Sri Damansara, Kuala Lumpur

Restaurant Thai Base is a restaurant that is located in Bandar Sri Damansara. This is not the first time that I am dining here and I have blogged about this restaurant in the past. To read my previous entry on this restaurant, you may access it from this link http://venoth.blogspot.com/2013/01/thai-base-restaurant-bandar-sri.html . Having started their business in 1989 as a catering company, they have since become very popular. As a catering company, they cater mainly for corporate functions and it is important to mention here that they are usually booked up to six months in advance. Due to local demand, they have started this restaurant a few years back and this restaurant too is always crowded if not full house on most days.

The Seating Area on the First Floor

Private Function Rooms are also available
If you were to read my previous entry on this place, I dined on the ground floor when we were here the last time but when we were here today, the ground floor was full house and we had to head up to the first floor. Even on the first floor, there were a number of tables that were already reserved and there were two remaining tables that were unoccupied. We took one of those tables and then the waiter handed us the menu.

The Menu
Their menu was built around a number of different cuisines but all are Halal. You can find Thai, Malay, Chinese and Western dishes on their menu. One of the reasons why this restaurant is so famous is that the prices of the dishes are very cheap, the portions are humongous and the taste is also relatively good. The owner himself was taking the orders this time and after selecting three dishes, he stopped us saying that that should be more than sufficient. I really appreciated his kind gesture as he was very customer centric and did not try to sell us more dishes than we could eat. Not many restaurants out there would practice this.

Nescafe @ RM 2.20
I ordered the above Nescafe for me. Their Nescafe was pretty good, less sweet and nice. I would rate it at 8.5/10 .

Carrot Juice @ RM 3.00
My brother ordered the Carrot Juice and it was good too. The concentration was good, not diluted and once again lightly sweetened. I would rate this drink at 8.8/10 .

Kopi Tarik @ RM 1.80
My dad ordered the above Kopi Tarik. This was a little disappointing and though we asked for less sugar, it was quite sweet. Also I did not like the fact that it was served in a chipped glass. I would only rate this at 5/10 .

Large White Rice @ RM 1.20

Ayam Masak Merah (Small) @ RM 10.00
We ordered four plates or large white rice which came at RM 1.20 each. The portion of the white rice was also relatively large. The first dish to arrive was the Ayam Masak Merah which is a famous Malay dish. For RM 10.00 , the portion was extremely huge. The chicken was also very nicely done and it was mostly wings and drumstick pieces. It came with a lot of gravy which had loads of onions and garlic in it. Very satisfying dish it was. I would rate this dish at a perfect 10/10 .

Steamed Egg (Small) @ RM 6.00
This was another fantastic dish and it was priced at a mere RM 6.00 . Though it is not easily noticed from the photo, this platter was about one feet long and the eggs were around half an inch in thickness. I have never ever seen this dish being sold at such a cheap price. The taste was also very good and although it is a Chinese dish, they have prepared it excellently here. I would rate this dish at 10/10 . Very satisfying!

Butter Prawns (Small) @ RM 22.00
Another excellent dish. These butter prawns came at RM 22.00 per plate and this was the small portion. For RM 22.00, we got sixteen large prawns which is absolutely great value for money. In our usual place, we would get around five or six prawns for RM 12.00 and if you multiply that, it would work to around eleven prawns for this price. Sixteen large prawns for RM 22.00 is a great deal!!! The taste was also excellent. Another dish that scores a perfect 10/10 .

Honestly, I do not know how they make their profits but surely their margins must be kept fairly low but with the volume of crowd they are attracting, it is surely a good marketing strategy. In fact when I was here today, I met an old schoolmate of mine which I have not met in twenty years. He is based in Kota Kemuning and came here all the way with his family to have dinner as he has heard so much about this place. As said before, this place is definitely a place that is worth dining in at least once and it would be good to come in large groups as that enables you to try more dishes and it also keeps the tab relatively low and their prices and so much cheaper compared to other restaurants out there. This is surely a highly recommended restaurant by me.
