Restaurant Popiah S.S. Ali needs no further introduction. This is a very famous chain that is slowly starting to grow throughout Shah Alam. They specialise in Popiah's and Curry Puffs. In fact, this is my second visit to this outlet that is located in Seksyen 7, Shah Alam very near to the UNISEL campus. I had previously blogged about this restaurant and seemingly that is the very first thing that comes up when you Google for this restaurant. Thanks to all my blog readers out there that have made that entry so famous. As my parents were in town and Popiah and Curry Puffs are one of my dad's favourites, I decided to take them here today for tea time to enjoy this delicacy. Honestly, I did not mind driving all the way to Shah Alam just to get these as I know that they are really good and my dad would surely enjoy it.

Popiah's & Curry Puffs on the display counter |
Their restaurant is very well designed and I like the simplicity and colour contrasts. The have both internal and external seating areas to cater for smokers as well. As it was a rather wet day and it was around 5+ pm, there were not much crowd in the restaurant at this time but I know for a fact that during lunch and dinner it can get rather very busy.

The choices of food are rather limited here but it is good as they only sell their house specialties. I have never tried their main dishes and have always stuck to their Popiah's and Curry Puffs. The Curry Puffs and Fried Popiah's are fried and displayed in the glass counter and are topped up as the float goes down. The Wet Popiah however, is made to order and takes just a few minutes for them to prepare. As it was a take away for us, we just walked up to the counter, placed our orders and within minutes we were all done. For those dine ins, orders are taken at your tables by the waitresses.
Wet Popiah @ RM 3.00 per set |
All their Popiah's and Curry Puffs are sold in sets of three. A set of any of those are sold for RM 3.00 which works out to RM 1.00 per piece. The above Wet Popiah is one of my favourites here. They come with a great amount of fillings and even more than what is available in those Chinese food courts out there. Besides having the sauce on the inside, they also spread a layer of the sauce on top of the Popiah's and garnish it with fried dried shrimps and eggs. Having a filling inside and the sauce and garnishing outside gives this Popiah an additional boost in taste and this garnishing method makes these Popiah's quite unique from what is found elsewhere. I would rate the above Wet Popiah's at a perfect 10/10 .
Fried Popiah @ RM 3.00 per set |
Just like the others, this too comes in sets of three at a price of RM 3.00 per set. Their Fried Popiah's too are another treat in itself. They too have their great fillings on the inside but without any sauce on the inside as they are fried but have a thick layer of chili sauce on the top and is once again garnished with fried dried shrimps. Here, eggs are not used for garnishing. I do like this too but enjoy the wet type more and I believe that is just a matter of personal preference. For me, that seems to be better than this and as such, I would rate these at 9.5/10 .
Curry Puffs @ RM 3.00 per set |
Their Curry Puffs too comes in sets of three and is again sold at RM 3.00 per set. The reason I love their Curry Puffs so much is because of their fillings. It comes with an equal spread of boiled eggs and spicy potato curry and always fills the curry puff perfectly so much so there are no empty pockets inside as you bite them. The boiled eggs blends well with the potato curry and creates a wonderful taste. Their skin is also very soft and not hard and flaky. By maintaining a soft and thin skin, it is able to bring out the fillings without having the dough to interfere with the taste. These are definitely some good curry puffs and I would rate them at 10/10 .
If you happen to be near the vicinity or if you are a Popiah or Curry Puff lover, then this place is definitely a must visit as it would be a taste to remember.
