Cafe Gerobok Danga @ Damansara Damai, Petaling Jaya

Cafe Gerobok Danga is another new addition to the food scene in Damansara Damai. This little restaurant is located in Seasons Square Retail and is directly opposite the TNB sub-station which is behind the Shell station on Jalan PJU 10/3. Having previously been operating on a small scale from home, the owner has now taken a huge step in opening a restaurant and building a legacy of her own.

Interior of the Restaurant

House Specialty
This restaurant has a rather nice and homely feel to it. Being simple in presentation, it had still cost them quite a bit in terms of the renovations that have been put in place including the plaster ceiling and exhaust pipes for ventilation. They have kept the ventilation good so much so even on a hot afternoon and despite the fact that cooking is done within that same small space, you do not feel the heat and the temperature is kept to a decent room temperature. This place is very much run by family members and they are very warm to the customers. The owners make it a point to strike conversations with their customers, get to know them and try as much as possible to meet their demands in terms of any specific preference when it comes to their food. The owner personally does the cooking herself all the time. Here, they specialise in Asam Pedas, Asam Laksa, Soto, Mee Rebus, Tahu Kacang and Sotong Kangkung. When I was speaking to her, she mentioned that previously she used to cook from home for her friends who used to support her by giving her small orders. They then recognised her talent and encouraged her to open a restaurant. Many of her dishes have a fusion recipe and has been adopted from a number of cultures making them fairly unique.

Sirap Bandung
I had the above Sirap Bandung Ice. I must say that the drink was absolutely fantastic. It was one of the best Sirap Bandung's that I have had in a very long time. Highly recommended to try it. I would rate this drink at 10/10 .

Asam Pedas Ikan Pari (Stingray)
Asam Pedas is one of my favourite Malay dishes and whenever I sight a new place serving this dish, I would always make it a point to try their cooking. Here they have a choice of three different fish, Pari, Kembung and Ikan Merah and I went for their Ikan Pari. It took them around 15 minutes to cook the dish as everything is made to order and there are no precooked items. This allows them to consistently serve fresh dishes and also cater the dishes according to the customer's preference assuming the customers wants it less spicy etc. When my dish was served, it was very appetising and the aroma was simply great. The gravy was abundant and it was really thick and red in colour. The fish was relatively huge in portion size and it came with a very fresh lady's finger or okra, whichever you are familiar with as the name differs country to country. Now, the gravy was lovely, spiced to the right level, although personally I would have preferred it to be much spicier, but it would be sufficiently spicy for most people and had a tinge of sourness to it, just the way it should be. I would say that this dish was made to perfection. Besides Aunty Aini's in Nilai, this is the only other place that I would say that they have perfected this dish. I have tried many places that have received recognition from the Jalan Jalan Cari Makan team for their Asam Pedas and they are all nothing compared to what I had just tried here. This was simply perfect!!! I would rate this dish at 10/10 .

Fried Egg with Onions & Chilies
I also added another dish of Fried Eggs and this came with diced Onions and Chilies as per my order. There was at least two eggs in this dish and it was again very good. I would rate this dish at 9/10 .

In summary, I am very pleased and satisfied with this restaurant. Their reception is very warm, the food is excellent and the price is fairly decent. My entire meal cost me a mere RM 15.10 which I feel is very reasonable. The only setback with this place is that they are not doing much A&P to bring the crowd to their place. Being fairly recent, they should do more posters around Damansara Damai to draw the crowd  as the restaurant is tucked in one corner of Damansara Damai where there isn't much traffic passing along that way. If they are able to reach out to people, I am very confident that their business would flourish. Even  now, they should be getting a decent number of referrals by word of mouth. I for one would surely pass the word around and recommend this place to my friends.  If you would like to do take aways, you could call them in  advance at the number below, place your orders and mention the time of pick up and they would have it ready for you. This is another great service that they have extended to their customers. Overall, a must try place for Asam Pedas lovers!!!
