Skohns Canteen @ Bandar Damansara Perdana, Petaling Jaya

This is a fairly recent outlet that has started operations in Bandar Damansara Perdana. They are locate at The Place which is fairly adjacent to the famous Mum's Place Restaurant. I was passing by this place today and then sighted this restaurant, did a little search on the internet and found out that they offer some good Western food on their menu and with that decided to swing by to check the place out.

Interior of the Restaurant
This restaurant has a very simple yet beautiful layout. It is owned by a Malay gentleman and seems relatively famous in this area. When I arrived, there was another table of about seven people who had all ordered Western dishes. When I checked with them, I was told that they offer two different menu's. For lunch, they serve local Malay dishes and some set lunches and for dinner, it is purely Western cuisine. There was no drinks menu and all their drinks were listed on the wall behind the drinks counter. We would just have to select them and place the orders. Their motto was Good Food at Canteen Prices and really the prices were quite cheap. After ordering my drinks, I was handed the dinner menu for me to choose from.

Dinner Menu

Dinner Menu
Their dinner menu is just limited to the above two pages which keeps the options rather simple. Seemingly, they specialise in burgers and grilled meat. I checked with them to see if the burger patties were chicken but unfortunately for me, they were all beef and I could not try them as I do not eat beef. They did have a Chicken and Vegetarian one but I was not in the mood for that. Instead, I wanted to sample an assortment of meat and went for their Mixed Grill which comes with a whole load of things.

Sirap Bandung Ice @ RM 2.50
The Sirap Bandung Ice was definitely very well prepared and for the price of RM 2.50, it came in a very tall glass. I like the way they presented it with a very catchy colour variations. The drink again was well prepared and not too sweet. I would rate this a perfect 10/10 .

Mixed Grill @ RM 25.00
As there were seven people ahead of me waiting for their meals, it took them quite a while to serve the food. By the time I got my food, it took a waiting time of around 45 minutes and this is not an estimate as I kept check of the time. Anyway, it was fine with me as I had all evening and was just relaxing while watching the television but it may not be acceptable to some who would have limited time at their disposal. Coming back to the dish, this was their Mixed Grill platter that came at a price of RM 25. It had a slice of Chicken Sausage, a slice of Lamb Sausage, a piece of Grilled Chicken, two thin cuts of Lamb, hand cut Potato Chips and some Salad. I would comment about each of those items separately below.

Chicken & Lamb Sausages
The first thing that I tried was their Chicken Sausage. It was actually Chicken and Cheese Sausage and I only realised it as I cut through it. The sausage was good and it was grilled to perfection. Not overdone, the meat was still tender and it had a hot juicy cheese filling which was great. I would rate this Chicken Sausage at 9/10 . The Lamb Sausage was actually Black Pepper Lamb Sausage. This was also good but not the best that I have tried. As it was Lamb, the sausage was slightly harder yet tasty. I would rate their Lamb Sausage at 8.5/10 .

Hand Cut Potato Fries
These Potato Fries were very unique here. This is the first time that I am seeing that they fried the fries along with their skin and somehow it was really delicious. The fries were not too thick and were just about the right size. Lightly salted, this was definitely done to perfection. I would boldly say that this would beat most fries out there anytime. My rating for this would be a perfect 10/10 .

Mushroom Sauce for the Meat Cuts
For the grilled meat, they had a choice of either Black Pepper, Brown Sauce or Mushroom Sauce. It was also very kind of them to put a note saying that both their Black Pepper and Brown Sauce were made by adding beef into it and as such, I had no options but to go for the Mushroom Sauce. This Mushroom Sauce was homemade and not something that you pop out of a can. There were real mushrooms in this and that made it taste better, although it was not that great. To me, this was just above average as it did taste slightly flat on my palate. I would rate this at 7.5/10 .

Grilled Chicken
The Grilled Chicken was absolutely great. In fact, it was so tender and juicy that it could just be eaten on its own. I thoroughly enjoyed their Grilled Chicken and must say that it is one of the best that I have tried. I would rate this a perfect 10/10 .

Grilled Lamb
Their Grilled Lamb was a major disappointment, especially as I am a Lamb lover. The cuts were too thin and they were overdone to the extent of the meat tasting charred. Being overdone, the meat was also rather dry and chewy as it has lost the moisture and juices which would have been great to have. I would only rate this at 4/10 .

On the whole and based on my experience today, they do have some great food to boast about and some which were a little let down but these could also be because they had too many dishes to churn out from the kitchen or else, it was just a glitch that could be easily overcome by modifying their cooking techniques. From my observation, their burgers too seemed pretty appetising and it was unfortunate that I could not try them. Would definitely come by one day to try their local delicacies which they offer for lunch.
