Hari's Stall @ Tanjung Malim, Perak

Hari's Stall isn't new to the locals in Tanjung Malim. This stall is located along Jalan Ketoyong, right opposite the Old Folks Home. Previously he had attempted on opening his own restaurant but sadly, that didn't quite work out as the rental was just too high for his kind of turnover. Having closed that restaurant in town, he moved back to this present location which is just a short distance from his home.

The Stall located along Jalan Ketoyong
The stall is a very simple set up with probably eight tables. He starts business around 6.30 pm and this goes on till midnight. His off days aren't fixed but he tries his best to be open daily, unless some emergency comes about. It is very much a family owned business and the stall is manned by his family members. I have been dining here for some time now and almost everyday, for some reason come here to get either some dinner items or even snacks. It just never struck me that I have never blogged about this place until recently and I decided to do it tonight. Today's trip shall be a takeaway of a number of items, all of which are vegetarian dishes. He offers both vegetarian and non vegetarian dishes. Most people come here for quick takeaways and a handful of dine-ins. Most of his customers are those living in this neighbourhood but I have seen some that come from afar too. The main reason for that is the home cooked style food that he offers and the prices too are very reasonable. In fact, they are much lower than the common stall and restaurant prices. Now, let's have a look at the dishes that I had bought today.

Vegetarian Nasi Lemak @ RM 2.00

Vegetarian Nasi Lemak @ RM 2.00
They offer both vegetarian and non vegetarian Nasi Lemak. This version comes with rice, some peanuts, cucumber and some spicy Sambal. This vegetarian version's Sambal is made purely using onions only and is priced at RM 2.00 . For the price, the portion is quite huge.

Nasi Lemak
The rice is cooked with coconut milk and is creamy and very fragrant. One of the good Tamil style Nasi Lemak's in town and I would rate the rice preparation at 8.8/10 . The Fried Peanuts and Cucumber too are fresh.

Vegetarian Sambal
The vegetarian Sambal is one of my favourites here. It is made using onions only and is very much on the spicy side. I would always ask for extra and till date, they have always obliged. Perfect Sambal that goes very well with the rice. I would rate their Sambal at 9.5/10 . As a matter of fact, among all the Tamil shops in town selling Nasi Lemak, this is indeed the best!

Idli @ RM 0.80 each

Soft Idli's
Believe me or not, this is the only place in town where I am able to get Idli's at night. These simple steamed rice pancakes are my parents' favourite and I almost daily come here just for these. They are pretty big and super soft. For the price of RM 0.80 , it is very much worth it. Moreover, it is so tasty. I would rate these at 9/10 .

Sambar

Sambar
Choices are limited here as it is just a simple stall. Sambar is available daily and they would also prepare some Chicken Curry and Fish Curry, alternating between the two on a rotation basis. As we were vegetarians today, I had requested them to pack some Sambar. This is not the watery version which we commonly get. It is thick, home style Sambar that comes with loads of potatoes and tomatoes. Very delicious and goes well with many of the items that they sell here. I would rate this at 8.8/10 .

Coconut Chutney

Coconut Chutney
Plain curries like this Coconut Chutney and the above Sambar are provided complimentary. Just like their Sambar, their Coconut Chutney is another good preparation too. Just like the previous, it is thick and concentrated and filled with spices. I would rate this at 8.5/10 .

Capati @ RM 1.30

Capati
Hari prepares all these dishes himself. The curries and other dishes (Idli included) are prepared at home but these items like Capati, Roti Canai, Tosai etc., are cooked upon request. Common price for Capati in Tanjung Malim is RM 1.50 but it is RM 1.30 at this stall. They are made using a mixture of Wheat Flour and whole Wheat Flour. The size is standard and it is way thicker than the famous places in town. Not the best of Chapati's, nevertheless they are still good and I would rate them at 8.3/10 .

Vegetarian Sambal

Vegetarian Sambal
My parents usually would love to have Chapati's with mashed potato gravy and since it is not available here, I requested them to pack an extra packing of the vegetarian Nasi Lemak's Sambal and they obliged. That too without any additional charges. For a change, having this with the Chapati was an excellent combination.

Overall, I must say that I am a very happy customer at Hari's. His food is good and the prices are so reasonable. If you happen to be in Tanjung Malim, I would recommend that you give this stall a try. Ask anyone where the Old Folks Home is and this stall is located right opposite it. Brightly lit up and so it is difficult to miss it. Besides these, he also sells home cooked style Mee Hoon Goreng, Mee Goreng, Tosai, Roti Canai and occasionally, Poori.
