A very famous place for Hawker Food in Ipoh is this Restoran Kam Wan. Previously, it was part of Wooleys but I believe that the partners have split a few years back and as a result, renamed this place to Restoram Kam Wan. The older building still belongs to Wooleys though. The good thing here is that Wooleys mainly does lunch business and this place focuses on dinner. Usually open from around 4 pm, business goes on till midnight. Those days, it used to go on till 2 am but of late, I have observed that they close up by midnight. Not sure if it is a city hall requirement.

Just Look At The Crowd |
|
Clean Place |
This is like a one stop food court where you would be able to get most Chinese food under one roof. The crowd that you see in the above photograph would simply be able to prove that point. It is almost customary for us to come here for dinner every time we are here in Ipoh. Both my dad and I simply love the food here. Parking is a huge problem at this restaurant and you would have to go around in circles looking for a bay. We were quite fortunate today as we managed to get a spot right when we drove in. Finally, having sorted out the parking part, we managed to get a table somewhere near the entrance.

Waiting For Our Dishes |
As we were vegetarians tonight, we had to limit ourselves to the vegetarian stalls. Fortunately there were two vegetarian stalls here. One was sold out and the other was still open. The first one is located close to the first entrance and the second one which was open is located right at the center of the food court. Ordering is quite simple. One could go on ordering at any of those stalls. All you would have to do is to mention the table number and in a matter of minutes, the dishes would be sent over. This particular vegetarian stall specialised in noodle variety. That was fine with us as we were not in the mood to have anything too heavy. Once I placed the orders, I was back to the table and now waiting for them to send over the dishes. It was not too long a wait and in approximately 15 minutes, the dishes were served.

Quite A Few Vegetarian Items Were Added |
|
I Choose Mee Hoon |
Their Tom Yam noodles was very good. In fact, it was one of the best vegetarian Tom Yam Noodles that I have tasted. Priced at RM 4.00, the portion was quite satisfying. You could choose any type of noodles to go with all their dishes and for this, I choose Mee Hoon. Besides the usual stuffs, they also added some vegetarian items that replaced the usual Tofu, Fish Balls and Fish Paste. The broth too was very good. Sour and spicy, it was just perfect and I would rate this at 9.5/10 . Loved it!

Mock Char Siew |
Their Vegetarian Curry Mee was also priced at RM 4.00 per bowl. Portion was good and this came with some mock Char Siew, Long Beans and some Beansprouts. Everything was good except that their curry itself was a little slacking. Flat tasting and overly creamy (too much coconut milk), the curry was not able to make the dish stand out as that's the most important thing with any Curry Mee dish. For me, I would only say that this is good to eat just to suppress your hunger and not for taste. My rating for this shall be only 6/10 . Quite average.

Very Light Broth |
This was nothing great too. The broth was just too light and seemed like some boiled salt water. Any instant noodle that comes in those plastic cups would have been anytime better than this. A sheer waste of ingredients. It had all the right add on's. If only the broth was good, this would have easily been an excellent dish. Just disappointed! I would only rate this at 4/10 .

Chili Paste |

Chili Paste |
With all the above dishes, they provided us with this Chili Paste. This Chili Paste was heavenly! Despite having given us some average tasting dishes, this really helped to boost the taste. I could even have this on it's own as it was just too good! I would rate this at 10/10 .

Ipoh Beansprouts @ RM 3.50 |
Ipoh Bean Sprouts is really very famous and having seen it on the menu, I just couldn't resist. The preparation was quite simple and standard. Lightly boiled Bean Sprouts were served in some Soy Sauce and this was topped with some White Pepper. The preparation was just okay but the Bean Sprouts itself was quite tasty. These were the thicker variety and they were so addictive. Enjoyed it and I would rate this at 9/10.
|
Coca Cola @ RM 2.40 |
Drinks' order's is usually taken at the table itself and we all ordered a can of Coca Cola each and these were priced at RM 2.40 . Wow! That's expensive as I can buy them in Kuala Lumpur for just RM 2.00 each. Ipoh is indeed getting very expensive. Even the food that we had earlier would have only cost us RM 3.00 each a few years back and now, it's on par with Kuala Lumpur and from my experiences over the past two days, some were even more expensive.

Dinner In Progress |
Food has been extremely good here all these years but this is the very first time that we are trying this particular vegetarian stall and we were not impressed except for their Tom Yam Noodles. The others were simply a let down. I would definitely return to Kam Wan but I doubt that I would return to that stall unless I am in the mood for their Tom Yam Noodles. Not for any other dishes.
